I am 100% guilty of taking on too much and often mistake busyness for action but can then sit back at the end of a month and realise I’ve been spinning my wheels and not actually getting anything significant done. I now allocate an hour every morning to doing something with purpose ie. a specific and important task and also try and allocate an hour or two a week to ‘playing’, just following my nose, keeping abreast of things, tossing around new ideas, reflecting and letting my brain wander. Both have proved fruitful.

Without reflection it’s hard to synthesize or make anything of all the inputs we are getting.

Rest is important biologically for learning http://www.bdlive.co.za/articles/2010/03/03/an-active-rest-for-learning-brain and I wonder if white space triggers some sort of a similar biochemical reaction?

Well said Tanveer – agreed on all points. The feeling of being “overworked and undervalued” is far too commonplace in today’s workforce. Thanks for stopping by Sir.

Your piece reminds me of a commonly heard statement that’s the focus of an upcoming talk I’m giving about how the majority of today’s employees are overworked, and yet feel underutilized. Clearly what’s going on here is that employees are kept busy doing work without feeling either a clear connection to how that work matters or that fails to tap into their talents and discretionary effort.

Similarly, if leaders attempt to fill in every moment of their day in order to feel efficient or productive, they’ll miss out on having the opportunity to evaluate whether their efforts are effective in helping their organization to achieve their shared goals.

Some of the most successful leaders today have been very open about the fact that they do block off time in their day for reflection and review. Given their performance, it’s certainly a behaviour and approach more of us would benefit in applying to our days as well.

Hi Ron:

Thanks for the kind words Ron. If we all spent less time examining others and more time assessing ourselves the world would be a better place. Have a great evening Ron.

My INTJ personality-type really likes the way you’ve promoted qualities deemed of little use in modern America’s leadership culture that seems to be all about thoughtless domination and ‘winning’ at all costs. Your well-considered critique of the benefits of self-examination is, as usual, right on the mark.

Ron

Hi William:

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your concept of thinking as a strategy is lost on many, but is absolutely necessary for leaders to grasp. Thanks for sharing William.

My mind is always moving and I used to think my actions had to be on pace with my mind in order to be productive. For years I found myself to be over committed.

Once I realized I could use my fast-paced thinking as a strategy tool, I was able to pull back on the tasks and move important things forward much more quickly and effectively.
